109 Voter Registration Requirements

No Previous Policy

Due to the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, anytime an adult applies for medical assistance, the adult must be given the opportunity to register to vote.  Ask all adult applicants if they want to register to vote. Explain that their decision will not impact their eligibility for medical assistance.  At review time, adult recipients must also be given the opportunity to register to vote.

When applicants or recipients want to register to vote, have them complete form VOT-80.  When needed, help applicants or recipients complete the voter registration form.  Never discourage applicants or recipients from registering to vote.  Also, do not try to influence applicants or recipients to join a particular political party or vote in a certain manner.

When recipients report an address change, they must again be given an opportunity to register to vote.  Have recipients complete form VOT-81 when they move, and want to register to vote at their new location.

Give form VPT-PM-82 to applicants or recipients who have questions about the voting process, where to vote, etc.  The form is designed to help answer some of these questions.
