Medicaid Policy
Relationship of Medicaid Household Members
An applicant must declare the relationships between household members. The relationship of household members is a factor used in eligibility decisions.
Relationships applicable to medical assistance eligibility include:
Parent to child.
Spouse to spouse (legally married and not divorced).
Sibling to sibling, including biological, adopted and step-siblings.
Caretaker relative to a dependent related child.
For programs using the MAGI-based methodology, an unrelated individual in the household may factor into the eligibility determination (401-2).
Establishing Relationships of Household Members
Accept the client's statement about the relationships of the household members. They may be living with the individual or temporarily absent. If the agency has conflicting information, request other verifications.
See Table VIII for documents that can verify relationship. In some cases, a combination of documents may be needed.
