Medicaid Policy
Effective Date: February 1, 2017
When Social Security denies an individual's application for SSI or SSDI, take the following actions:
If the SSI or SSDI denial or closure reason is that the person is not blind or disabled and the individual does not claim a new condition, use the SSA decision for 12 months from the date of the decision.
Close or deny Blind or Disabled Medicaid.
Consider eligibility for other medical assistance programs.
See section 303-7 if the individual appeals the SSA decision.
If the individual was denied SSI or SSDI for not being disabled within the past 12 months and claims a new disabling medical condition, ask for a new State Medicaid Disability Office determination.
NOTE: When SSA denies disability after the MRB has approved disability, but before the worker has authorized benefits, the case must be denied based on the SSA decision.
If the denial or closure is for something other than disability see sections 303-2 and 303-3.
