Table II Asset Limits

Applying the Asset Limit

To determine the asset limit, first determine the individual’s household size. Asset limits vary based on household size for most programs. See 503-1 to determine whose assets to count.

All Aged, Blind and Disabled Medicaid, MWI

Use a one-person asset limit for an individual who is not living with a spouse.

Use the two-person asset limit for a person who is living with his or her spouse, except when that spouse is eligible under a home- and community-based Medicaid waiver program or residing in a nursing home. Then, only count the non-waiver, non-institutionalized spouse's assets, using the spousal impoverishment rules in 573.

Deem assets from parents to a minor disabled child. Do not count the parents in the child’s household size. See 503-1 for rules on how to deem assets from parents.

Asset limit for Aged, Blind and Disabled Medicaid:

1 person: $2000

2 people: $3000

Medicaid Work Incentive Program-$15,000 for all household sizes

Medicare Cost-Sharing Programs

Use the asset limit for one person for an individual who is not living with a spouse.

Use the asset limit for two persons for an individual living with his or her spouse, even when the spouse is eligible under a home and community based waiver program.  Assets held by either spouse, or jointly held, count toward the asset limit.

See Table II for asset limits.

Medically Needy Family, Child and Pregnant Woman

Use the asset limit that matches the number of people being counted in the assistance unit's household size. Some household members may be eligible for a different program, but are still counted in the household size for medically needy (503-1).

Medically Needy Family, Child and Pregnant Woman Medicaid asset limits:

1 person: $2000

2 people: $3000

Add $25 for each additional person in the assistance unit’s household size.

Nursing Home and HCB Waiver Programs

Count only the assets of the nursing home resident or individual on the HCB waiver program.

Do not deem assets from the parent of a minor child.

Do not deem assets from a spouse after the Assessment of Assets. Follow the spousal impoverishment rules for married couples to determine the amount of assets that are countable for the individual. The couple may need to separate assets that have been held jointly after the Assessment of Assets (573).

The asset limit for an institutionalized person or someone on an HCB waiver is $2000.

Medicaid Work Incentive Program (MWI)

The asset limit for MWI is $15,000 for all household sizes.
