These statuses allow disabled people who go to work to continue to be SSI recipients and to continue to receive Medicaid.

People who have 1619(a) status still receive SSI payments even though their monthly gross earned income exceeds the SGA level.

People who have 1619(b) status do not receive an SSI payment because of their earned income.  These people are still considered SSI recipients even though they don’t get SSI payments.

Age does not affect 1619(a) or (b) status. Keep a client with 1619(a) or 1619(b) status open on DM after age 65.

How to Identify 1619(b) Eligible

Only SSA can decide 1619(b) status.  Clues that indicate 1619(b) status are:

Consider the client 1619(b) eligible while you verify 1619(b) status with SSA if the client:

Changes that can affect 1619(b) Status:

  1. Marriage. Send a FAX inquiry to SSA to check 1619(b) status if a client marries:

    1. Continue the Medicaid 1619(b) status if SSA says the client still has 1619(b) status,

    2. Determine eligibility for other Medicaid programs if SSA says that client does not have 1619(b) status.

  2. Other income, or increases in earned income. Send a FAX inquiry to SSA to check 1619(b) status if the client’s earnings exceed the 1619(b) limit (Table II-ABD Income Limits):

    1. Continue 1619(b) status if SSA says the client still has 1619(b) status.

    2. Determine eligibility for other Medicaid programs if SSA says the client does not have 1619(b) status.
