Use section 500 and the following rules to determine countable assets. In addition to the asset exclusion in section 500 also exclude:
Retirement funds of the MWI client held in an employer or union pension plan, retirement plan or account including 401(k) plans, an Individual Retirement Account or other similar arrangement even if the individual can access the funds. This includes any interest and additional contributions.
A second vehicle when it is used by the MWI’s spouse or child living in the household to get to work.
Compare the countable assets to the MWI asset limit of $15,000. If countable assets are at or below the limit, the client is asset eligible for MWI.
Lifetime asset exclusions:
Continue to exclude these assets for the lifetime of the client when determining aged, blind or disabled Medicaid eligibility for the client when:
The client was on MWI for at least one month, and
The assets were excluded while the client was on MWI.
The second vehicle can only be excluded if the spouse or child continues to work. The vehicle being excluded could be changed to a different vehicle.
Count these assets when:
Determining eligibility for another household member.
Determining eligibility for a Medicare Cost-Sharing or family related Medicaid program for the MWI client.
