Deduct these amounts from the client’s total income (372-1) in the following order to determine the client’s contribution to the cost of care:

Earned income deduction (409-5).

Personal Needs Allowance (PNA) (409-10) or the BMS (414-1).

Spousal Needs Allowance (SNA) (409-11).

Deduction for Dependent Family Members (409-12).

Health Insurance Premiums (409-1).

Medical Expenses (415).

If the client's contribution to the cost of care is equal to or less than what the nursing home would charge a private pay resident, open the case for nursing home care.

If the client’s contribution to the cost of care is more than the nursing home private pay rate, determine if the case should be opened for ancillary services (833).
