Obsolete 0118 - 503 Asset Limits

Effective Date: January 1, 2014 - December 31, 2017

No previous policy

Not all Medicaid programs have an asset limit (500). MAGI type medical programs do not have an asset limit. For medical assistance programs that do have an asset limit, a client's countable assets must be equal to or less than the applicable asset limits.  It makes no difference if the client receives SSI, although most SSI recipients do not have assets exceeding the Medicaid asset limit.

The following sections explain which Medicaid programs have asset limits, what they are, what assets are counted to determine the household's countable assets, and how to verify assets.

Do not count anything as an asset if it is being counted as income in that month, except as defined in Section 512 relating to trusts.

If a client does not have a burial plan or life insurance, and is over the resource limit, ask if he has any funds set aside for burial.  Policy about setting funds aside for burial is found in 592
