Obsolete 0718 - 631-1 What is CHEC?

Effective Date: September 1, 2004 - June 30, 2018 (This is obsolete as of July 1, 2018)

CHEC is a Medicaid benefit for recipients under age 21.  There are two components:

  1. Preventive Health Care

Children are entitled to well-child screenings based on their age and need.  The well-child screenings include a comprehensive physical evaluation, health and nutrition history, vision and hearing tests, growth and developmental check and needed laboratory tests.  Immunizations are also provided.  Children are also entitled to dental check-ups based on their age and need.  These check-ups may include cleaning, x-rays, topical fluoride treatments and sealants as needed.

Families are notified when it is time to make an appointment for a CHEC well-child screening.  A CHEC outreach worker will contact the family by telephone or by mail to inform the family that the child is due for a CHEC visit.  The CHEC outreach worker will offer help in scheduling the visit.

  1. Expanded Medicaid Services

Children are entitled to medically necessary services, not normally covered by Utah Medicaid, as part of the CHEC program.  For example, many organ transplants are only covered for children under age 21.  Expanded Medicaid services require prior approval.

Children ages 19-20 that are on non-traditional Medicaid do not qualify for expanded services.
